I do a lot of drive by photography in Greenland. I’m moving on a small boat with capacity for 10 people max. This boat was tiny by comparison with capacity for 2 people and much farther north at the top of the world near Siorapaluk, Greenland. I was with my hunter and we had just caught a seal for harvesting. However, a storm was coming in and we needed to get back to Qaanaaq as soon as possible. In the distance, I took out my camera to capture the most beautiful and dramatic light embracing a mountain with what appears to be tiny icebergs dispersed in the sea nearby. We made it back to Qaanaaq with a meal in tow but I’ll never forget this sight. It’s very possible that this image is the only one ever captured because Siorapaluk is rarely visited. It’s now a population of 24 people and the settlement in endangered of being abandoned in the coming years.

As a principle, I do not do much editing to my photos. At most, I may adjust tones and brightness because I intentionally bracket or shoot dark to preserve details. This is what it looked like to the naked eye and I’m grateful to fearless local hunter that got us to our destination safely. This is a limited edition: only 5 prints this size will be created.
